Educational vegetable garden for the Le Châtelard Association

Context and objective
In 2022, the CMP classes launched an ambitious nature project by creating a vegetable garden with the support of Légumes Perchés, a specialist in urban agriculture and the creation of educational gardens in schools. The vegetable garden was inaugurated at the start of the school year in September, with the first seedlings planted for a successful fall harvest.
The students gradually learned the essential skills of gardening: planting, watering, weeding, observing, and more. In November, they had the pleasure of enjoying the first lettuce and cabbages produced by their work in class. The arrival of winter provided an opportunity to learn how to prepare the soil for the cold season.
In spring 2023, the garden came back to life. It was expanded, and new plants were planted for a first spring harvest. At the same time, one class built an insect hotel, incorporating a broader discussion on biodiversity, beneficial insects, and soil fertility. As the seasons change, students observe the garden’s evolution and deepen their understanding of life. During upcoming harvests, they will also have the opportunity to learn how to cook vegetables, whether raw or cooked—a practical and delicious way to connect nature, food, and learning.
The solution implemented
Through our “From Seed to Plate” program, regular workshops allow students to explore new plants, textures, and flavors year after year, while strengthening the connection between nature, food, and learning. The vegetable garden thus becomes a truly living, evolving educational tool that is integrated into daily school life. To ensure its sustainability, Légumes Perchés supports the teaching team with a clear organization of seasonal tasks and planning adapted to timetables, ensuring smooth and sustainable management of the garden.
